REDCLIFF HISTORY
Redcliff has a rich history which began in the 1880s with the discovery of abundant coal and natural gas reserves. Easy access to this inexpensive resource led to Redcliff being promoted as the “Smokeless Pittsburgh of the West” and drew industries that produced many diverse products. A cyclone ravaged several of these businesses and started a decline in the 1910s; subsequent war and a flu epidemic ended the town’s prosperity. Following World War II, the community again experienced steady growth. Redcliff is more recently known for its greenhouses and the production of brick and pottery products, though the brick and pottery industries have now moved to Medicine Hat.The town is currently enjoying prosperity as the gas and oil industries in the area are strong.
