A Brief History of Gordon
Memorial United Church
Conceptually, Gordon Memorial
began in 1907 when the first Presbyterian worship was held in the Redcliff
Brick and Coal Co. Cookhouse.
In 1910, worship was moved
to a new wood-frame building on the church's existing site. But, by 1913,
the congregation had grown to the point where a new building was required.
The basement for our current
church building had been excavated and the foundations poured when WWI
broke out and construction was delayed until after the war. During this
time, the Catholic Church opened its doors to allow Presbyterian worship
in their sanctuary. By 1921, worship services began in the basement
of the new church, which was finally completed in 1928.
The name "Gordon Memorial"
reflects the congregation's love for their minister at the time, Reverend
G. Lawson Gordon. Rev. Gordon passed away January 5, 1919, just before
the church was opened.
Today Gordon Memorial is
a vibrant active church striving to meet the needs of the growing community
of Redcliff.
